This short video establishes the difference between three types of “eco friendly” plastics–degradable, biodegradable, and compostable. Degradable plastics have been designed to break into smaller pieces, but these pieces pretty much last forever. Biodegradable plastics will be broken down by things like fungi and they often require exposure to UV light and warmer temperatures to decompose. Compostable plastic is a type of biodegradable plastic that can be broken down in industrial and sometimes home composting systems. The important thing to remember is that if biodegradable plastic ends up in a landfill or the ocean or anywhere else it isn’t supposed to be, it may never break down, and thus continues to pollute our beautiful Earth.
