New Hanover County is starting a pilot program using a huge food composting system that officials hope will ultimately mean no more food ending up in the landfill. These composting measures would extend the lifespan of the landfill by 90 to 180 yearsl. For the next year, the pilot program will take food thrown away by the University of North Carolina Wilmington and run it through the composter. UNC Wilmington was able to partner with the county on the project because the university’s dining facilities can provide food waste after inorganic material like metal, glass and plastic are removed. Future expansions could include food thrown away by schools, hospitals, and grocery stores being turned into usable compost instead of sitting in the landfill.
