Mayor R. Rex Parris (Republican) of Lancaster, California made it his mission to make the city the alternative-energy capital of the world. During the Recession, the city had a 17 percent unemployment and a housing market dominated by foreclosures. Parris helped transition the city to renewable energy through a solar thermal plant and other initiatives. The economic concerns and cost savings associated with renewable energy resonated with him, as did the effects of climate change once he began reading more into it. Paris said the green energy initiatives created more than 1,000 local jobs, cut energy costs by about 3 to 15 percent, and helped unemployment fall to 4 percent. Another Republican mayor, Dale Ross, of Georgetown, TX (Republican) said that the jump to clean energy was a no-brainer for him given economic costs and the environmental benefits of powering the town with wind and solar. Although President Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris Accords, mayors around the country pledged that their cities would still pursue the tenets of the treaty, including primarily Democrats but some notable Republicans as well. Such bipartisanship is of the utmost importance when advancing environmental, social, and economic initiatives.
