At a United Nations environmental meeting on Wednesday, some countries advocated a zero tolerance approach to plastic approach. More than 200 countries adopted a resolution urging much more to be done about plastic waste. In addition to plastics, the assembly also adopted resolutions on mercury and lead poisoning and air pollution. The assembly also celebrated initiatives in Chile and Sri Lanka to ban or restrict plastic bags or single-use plastics. The focus was on pollution because it is the single largest cause of premature deaths worldwide, causing 9 million deaths and air pollution causing 6.5 million of those. Pollution, including plastic pollution, is a drag on economic growth equal to 6.2 percent of global economic output!
