The environmental movement of the 1970s directly shaped American recycling programs. Prior to the 1970s, there was little interest or urgency to recycle. There are parallels with this narrative and the current one about composting. Tactics that the recycling industry used will likely also be helpful in promoting the awareness and importance of composting. Involvement by corporations and a winning logo (the iconic three arrow recycling symbol) helped propel recycling into the national consciousness and establish recycling norms. Interest from local businesses and a composting logo are likely strategies that will help spur composting initiatives in the United States.
