Why Compostable and not Reusable – Schools are different!

List of NC Schools and associated websites (select option titled Section 3 – Schools): This link sends you to an informative website about the school districts in NC as well as their respective School Boards. It is a good idea to know your School Board. The local school board is a critical public link to parents, children, and the community at large.  School board members serve their communities in several important ways:

  • Make programmatic decisions and make funding decisions regarding the education of children.
  • Incorporate their community’s view of what students should know and be able to do.
  • Are accessible to the public and accountable for the performance of their schools.
  • Serve as the education watchdog for their communities, ensuring that students get the best education for the tax dollars spent.

Speak to your school board members to garner support and to determine what funding and in-kind support is available. You can find your school board members by clicking on this link to the School District (select option titled Section 3 – Schools); find your school district  and then search for the School Board!  It never hurts to speak up!

Food and Nutrition: Public or Private: One thing that we, as parents, did not know is that some school districts in NC may use federal, state, and/or local money to pay for school meals, but they may alternatively contract with a private company.

  • Chartwells in Chapel Hill/ Carrboro City Schools: Chartwells is a national company that currently has the contract for Chapel Hill schools.
  • NC Procurement Alliance  is a voluntary association of NC school districts that buy goods for districts that use public money for meals. The goal of this association is to save money through volume purchasing.
